Facts

Nationally the average age of a dog in Australia is 3 years old.  Many dogs are Euthanased during their 'teenage years' due to behavioural issues.

What is a behavioural problem for one person is not necessarily a problem for someone else.

A behaviour only becomes a problem when it has a negative impact on society.

Behaviour problems are often caused by humans.

A behaviour cannot be fixed if the owner does not recognise that there is a problem.

Many behaviour problems can be resolved by better leadership.

The longer the dog displays the behaviour the longer it will take to correct.

Stress and Dogs

When a dog is on edge, there is often symptoms which can manifest as Behavioural issues.  In these cases the dog is often stressed before displaying the behaviour.  All dogs show stress by one means or another.  Stress isn't always bad, for example a dog can be stressed going to the park because it is anticpating a good time.  However a bad stress is when you come home to find the fly screen door chewed.  Sometimes a dog will release the stress to calm itself this is an example of the dog coping with the situation.  A common indication of this is yawning or shaking.

Some ways a dog can show signs of stress are:

Yawning

Panting

Shaking (the whole body)

Tongue flicking

Salivation

Sweaty paws

Dandruff

Recent Case

The owner of this dog was unable to clean its ears without the dog putting up a fight.  After seeing a demonstration of the behaviour I was able to see that the dog was under the illusion that it was winning when trying to run away due to the way it was being held.  I gave a demonstration to my client on a better way and the whole procedure was a lot calmer and thus the dog did not fight or feel that it needed to.  The best thing was that after I had cleaned both ears the dog still was happy in my prescence.
